Institution categories
The following section briefly presents the key characteristics and bibliometric indicators for eleven Institution Categories, as well as the institutions that achieved the highest values. The data refers to the last 5-year period of this study 2012-2016.
Universities:
Number and share of (%) publications: The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki produce the greatest number of publications in the category "Universities" with 14,833 (30.7%) and 10,715 (22.2%), respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than the Greek performance (72.9%) is accomplished by Harokopio University of Athens (78.5%) and the University of Crete (77.7%). These are followed by University of Ioannina (76.2%), the University of Western Macedonia (75.3%), the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (75.1%), and the Agricultural University of Athens (74.3%).
Number and share (%) of citations: The higher number of citations was attributed to Universities with the higher number of publications for 2012-2016 - the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The former had 131,943 citations and a share of 39.3% within the category, while the latter had 74,939 citations and a share of 22.3%.
Relative citation score: Publications by 14 universities exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, a small number of publications from the University of Western Macedonia, the University of Peloponnese, the Open University and the Harokopio University of Athens achieve the highest citation score (respectively, 2.19, 1.69, 1.63, 1.62). Above the world average are also the University of Ioannina (1.57), the University of Crete (1.51) the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1.41), the National Technical University of Athens (1.33), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1.25), the University of Aegean (1.22), the Agricultural University of Athens (1.19), the Technical University of Crete (1.03) and the University of Patras and the Democritean University of Thrace (1.00, respectively).
ΤΕΙ:
Number and share of (%) publications: The TEIs of Athens and Thessaloniki produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "TEIs" during the 2012-2016 period with 684 (20.8%) and 505 (15.4%) publications, respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: No TEI manages to outperfrom the Greek total performance (72.9%).
Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2012-2016 period are received by the publications of the TEIs of Crete and Athens. The former had 2,690 citations and a share of 19.9% within the category, while the latter had 2,357 citations and a share of 17.4%.
Relative citation score: Publications by 6 TEIs exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, the TEI of Ionian Islands achieve a citation score of 1.43. Above the world average are also the publications of TEI of Crete (1.32), TEI of Sterea Ellada (1.29), the TEI of Western Macedonia (1.10) the TEI of Thessaloniki (1.05) and the TEI of Epirus, as well as ASPAITE (1.00, respectively).
Research Centers supervised by GSRT:
Number and share of (%) publications: The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas and the National Center of Scientific Research (NCSR) DEMOKRITOS produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Research Centers" during the 2012-2016 with 2,421 (29.2%) and 2,386 (28.7%) publications, respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 72.9% (the Greek performance, in sum) is accomplished by the great majority of the Research Centers. Specifically, BSRC FLEMING (88.0%), the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (81.6%), NCSR DEMOKRITOS (78.0%), FORTH (77.8%), the National Observatory of Athens (77.7%), HCMR (77.7%), NHRF (76.5%) and CERTH (73.7%).
Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2012-2016 period are received by the publications of NCSR DEMOKRITOS and FORTH. The former had 27,734 citations and a share of 37.1% within the category, while the latter had 22,033 citations and a share of 29.5%.
Relative citation score: Publications by 9 Research Centers exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, BSRC FLEMING achieve a citation score of 2.00, ATHENA (1.62), NCSR DEMOKRITOS (1.62), HCMR (1.44), the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (1.37), FORTH (1.36), the National Observatory of Athens (1.24), the Atomic Commission (1.11) and CERTH (1.07).
Other Public Research Institutions:
Number and share of (%) publications: The Academy of Athens and the National Agricultural Research Foundation produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Other Public Research Institutions" during the 2012-2016 with 1,1259 (47.4%) and 550 (20.7%) publications, respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 72,9% (the Greek performance, in total) is accomplished by the Academy of Athens (80.8%), Entities of the Ministry of Health (76.4%) and YPPO (73.1%).
Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2012-2016 period are received by the publications of the Academy of Athens (13,500) and a share of 66.6% within the category, while the Hellenic Agricultural Organization Demeter has 2,542 and a share of 12.5%.
Relative citation score: Publications by 5 Other Public Research Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, Academy of Athens achieved the highest citation score (1.50). Publications by the Institute of Engineering Seismology & Earthquake Engineering (1.33), Computer Technology Institute and Press "Diophantus" (1.17), by Entities of the Ministry of Culture (1.12), by CRES (1.02) achieved higher citation scores than the world average.
Public Health Institutions:
Number and share of (%) publications: The IPPOKRATEIO General Hospital of Athens (IPPOKRATEIO ATHENS) and the Evaggelismos Hospital of Athens (EVAGGELISMOS) produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Public Health Institutions" during the 2012-2016 with 699 (12.0%) and 607 (10.4%) publications, respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than the total Greek score of 72.9% is accomplished by the ALEXANDRA (79.5%), the SOTIRIA (77.3%), the THEAGENIO Cancer Hospital of Thessaloniki (77.3%), the AGIA SOPHIA (74.7%), the G. PAPANIKOLAOU (74.5%), the KORGIALENEIO (74.4%), the G.GENNIMATAS (74.2%), the G. PAPAGEORGIOU General Hospital (73.9%) and the EVAGGELISMOS (73.1%).
Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2012-2016 period are received by the publications of IPPOKRATEIO ATHENS and EVAGGELISMOS. The former had 4,741 citations and a share of 11.2% within the category, while the latter had 3,991 citations and a share of 9.5%.
Relative citation score: Publications by 4 Public Health Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, the ALEXANDRA achieved a citation score of 5.51, SOTIRIA General Hospital of Athens (1.50), G. PAPANIKOLAOU (1.04) and the LAIKO General Hospital of Athens (1.03).
Private Health Institutions:
Number and share of (%) publications: Hygeia Hospital and the Athens Medical Group produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Private Health Institutions" during the 2012-2016 with 318 (15.8%) and 162 (8.0%) publications, respectively.
Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 72.9% (the Greek score, in sum) is accomplished by Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences (AIBS) (85.0%), HENRY DUNANT (81.2%), Metropolitan Hospital (77.0%), and St. Luke's Hospital (74.8%).
Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2012-2016 period are received by the publications of AIBS and HENRY DUNANT. The former had 2,308 citations and a share of 13.0%, while the latter 2,301 citations and a share of 13.0%,
Relative citation score: Publications by 7 Private Health Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2012-2016, AIBS achieve a citation score of 2.50, HENRY DURANT (1.52), Hygeia Hospital (1.24), St. Luke's Hospital (1.19), Metropolitan Hospital (1.17), IASO Hospital (1.10) and EUROCLINIC Group (1.05).
