A Study Series for Recording and Mapping Research Activity in Greece

The National Documentation Centre of Greece (EKT) periodically publishes established and reliable indicators on the research activity in Greece.

Since indicators on research activity are an essential tool for evaluating research results and guide the formation of new policies for research, technology and innovation, the issue of research indicators lies at the center of the topical public dialogue on a global scale.

EKT in its statutory role for the collection, organization and distribution of scientific information, is making use of large volumes of documented data, expertise of human resources and modern technical infrastructures to undertake activities related to the mapping of the research activity in Greece. Along with other activities, EKT produces periodical studies, reports on scientific indicators related to scientific publications (bibliometrics), research activity (scientometrics), the use of informational web data and resources (webometrics) and operates the Current Research Information Systems (CRIS). Scientific publications – a central means for the distribution of research results within the scientific community – are the main resources when mapping and evaluating research activity. EKT regularly carries out detailed studies recording and systematically processing data on scientific publications. The study series ‘Greek Scientific Publications: a Bibliometric Analysis of Greek Publications in International Scientific Journals’ aims to identify the basic characteristics of Greek scientific output and to explore Greece’s position in the international scientific landscape. At the national and international level, a variety of public bodies, research institutions, universities and policy makers are using these studies as a point of reference that:

Reveal the characteristics of Greek scientific output.

Define trends and tendencies in research activity at the level of institutions and fields.

Estimate the impact of scientific work.

Identify national and multinational networks across scientific fields.

The National Documentation Centre follows a distinct methodological approach, applies advanced validation techniques and develops the software required for the procession and analysis of data. The periods covered in these studies are: 1993-2008, 1996-2010, 2000-2014, and 2002-2016 (current edition). Data for these editions was drawn from the databases of the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters).
